Alyssa was torn between buying a house in the suburbs or renting an apartment downtown. The house offered space and quiet, while the apartment promised a short commute and lively surroundings. After weeks of indecision, she turned to the SmartChoice Matrix Decision-Maker. By listing key factors like affordability, commute, and space, then scoring each option, she quickly saw the suburban house was the better fit for her priorities.

Ever been stuck between two choices, constantly switching between Option A and Option B? What if making a tough decision could be as straightforward as comparing numbers? That’s exactly what the SmartChoice Matrix Decision-Maker does, helping you break down life’s big decisions and see them clearly in black and white.

Whether you're deciding to move, stay, quit, continue, or go back to school, this tool brings clarity to the process. It pinpoints the factors that matter most to you, ranks them, and turns your options into easy-to-read scores. The higher the score, the better the choice. it’s really that simple.

  • Step 1: List the two options you’re considering, whether it’s jobs, cities, or anything else.
  • Step 2: Write down the factors important to your decision (e.g., salary, growth, work-life balance).
  • Step 3: Rank the importance of each factor from 1-10.
  • Step 4: Score how well each option satisfies each factor.
  • Step 5: Multiply the factor’s weight by its grade to get a weighted score. Total up the scores, and the higher number shows your best choice.
  • Step 6 (Optional): If you’re unsure, you can rate your confidence in each grade and multiply a confidence adjustment factor by the weighted score for a confidence-adjusted total.

Decisions often have factors you feel very certain about (e.g., "I know I need to be close to work!") and others you’re less sure about (e.g., "I’m not sure how much I’ll use the gym in this apartment"). The confidence adjustment factor is a way to reflect how certain or uncertain you are about the scores you've assigned to each factor in your decision-making process. It adjusts the Weighted Score (which represents how important a factor is and how well each option satisfies it) based on your level of confidence in your rating for that factor. The higher the confidence, the more the factor’s score is reinforced; the lower the confidence, the less impact that factor will have on the final decision.

- Low Confidence (Rating 1-5): When you’re not confident about a score, the Confidence Adjustment Factor reduces the impact of that factor on the final decision by multiplying the Weighted Score by a smaller number (e.g., 0.8 or 0.9). This indicates that, because you're unsure about that factor, it has less weight in your decision.

- Medium Confidence (Rating 6-7): If you're fairly confident about a score, you don’t need much adjustment, so the Confidence Adjustment Factor could be 1. This means the factor's score remains the same.

- High Confidence (Rating 8-10): When you’re very confident in your score, the Confidence Adjustment Factor can increase the Weighted Score by multiplying it by a larger number (e.g., 1.1 or 1.2). This means you're giving more weight to this factor because you're sure it matters to you.

This tool includes two pages:

  • Page 1 provides the instructions and the SmartChoice Matrix tables.
  • Page 2 offers more space for more factors, without repeated instructions.

Designed for significant, life-altering decisions, this template allows you to compare two or more choices with ease. You can even add more pages if you have more options to evaluate. If you’re dealing with simpler decisions or just one choice, use The Decision-Maker template. It’s quicker, involves listing pros and cons, and works best when time is of the essence.

With the SmartChoice Matrix, you’ll have a navigational tool that helps you weigh your options, prioritize what matters, and make informed decisions confidently.
